Since their 2018 debut On, Altın Gün have been putting their own spin on Turkish folk and Anatolian psychedelia, pairing winding bağlama melodies with wah-wah guitar, heavy basslines, organ and percussion. Drawing on pioneers including Barış Manço and Erkin Koray, it’s a sound steeped in tradition with plenty of room for experimentation – and dancing!

Their fifth album, Garip, pays tribute to legendary Turkish singer, songwriter and bağlama player Neşet Ertaş. The band give his songs of love, longing and everyday life a fresh take, adding funk-rock, synths, slide guitar and strings by the Stockholm Studio Orchestra. For vocalist and bağlama player Erdinç Eçevit, who grew up listening to Ertaş’s music, it’s also a personal nod to the songs of his childhood.
