EVAN DANDO
Melbourne Solo Show December 2010
“Behold one of pop’s great dreamers” NME
“Dando’s songs stand up exceptionally well stripped to their barest essentials” Pitchfork
Armed only with his guitar, The Lemonheads compelling frontman Evan Dando will deliver an acoustic performance at the Northcote Social Club on Sunday the 12th of December, featuring songs from his solo album Baby Iʼm Bored, an array of covers and stripped back Lemonheads classics such as ʻIt’s A Shame About Rayʼ, ʻMy Drug Buddy, ʻIf I Could Talk Iʼd Tell Youʼ , and ʻBig Gay Heartʼ.
Evan formed The Lemonheads with two high school friends in 1986, and within a few short months they had recorded their debut EP, which is now one of the most sought after punk relics of the 80s. Almost 25 years has since passed, during which there was a band hiatus spanning 9 years, numerous line up changes, 10 Lemonheads studio releases, an Evan Dando solo album and endless grueling touring schedules.
A tour in 1991 brought Evan to Australia, where he met songwriter Tom Morgan and future Lemonheads bassist Nic Dalton. The three collaborated on the 1992 classic masterpiece, It’s A Shame About Ray, which is still said by many critics to be the bands greatest album to date. Now considered his home away from home, Evan has since returned to his Australian friends and fans countless times.
With The Lemonheads show at The Corner sold out and second show at the Espy not far behind, this will be the last opportunity to welcome home Evan Dando as he performs in this special intimate setting.
“The outfit built around singer, guitarist, writer Evan Dando… Lemonheads prove themselves masters at the pop art of taking a simple musical idea and maximising it to thrilling, melodious effect.” Q Magazine
“A perfect pop album… the mellowness of country rock, the loud guitars of grunge, the impatience of punk and the lyrical concision and perfectly-observed detail of a Ray Davies or early Elvis Costello. And the whole thing was washed in a sweet, dopey, lazy sunniness that gave warmth to everything it touched, and belied the precision and focus of the songwriting.” Mojo
