THE DELGADOS
Australian Tour February 2005
The Delgados are one of the most loved and respected bands to have emerged from Scotland in the last 10 years. They have earned a place in the hearts and record collections of music lovers throughout the world with their articulate brand of intelligent, literate pop music, shot through with invention, diversity and more recently, majestic orchestrations. Striving to make each record more ambitious than the last, theirs is a song-writing learning curve that has left many of their contemporaries in the shade.
That they established Chemikal Underground Records, one of Scotland’s most successful and influential labels, launching the careers of Bis, Arab Strap and Mogwai along the way, is another story entirely: that it firmly secured The Delgados’ position at the forefront of Scotland’s independent music scene, is incontestable.
“Universal Audio”, their latest album, is stripped of strings and orchestral augmentation, & is a return to their inventive core. Smothered in guitars; drenched in hooks; loaded with melodies and overflowing with harmonies, Universal Audio is a pop triumph: articulate, eclectic, overwhelmingly immediate and thoroughly captivating. In “Universal Audio” they have produced a pop album that draws influences from The Beach Boys to Kate Bush; The Kinks to Depeche Mode while retaining the irresistible and unique sound of The Delgados.
